Pro Musica is delighted to announce that our 2018 opera will be Mozart's Don Giovanni.  There will be two performances at the Teatro Angela Peralta, on February 9th and 11th, 2018; Friday at 7 pm and Sunday at 5 pm.  This is our first production of a Mozart opera and, as always, it is our own staging, to be directed by Rodrigo Garciarroyo again, whose productions over the last two seasons have met with widespread acclaim.  Don Giovanni is widely regarded as the most 'perfect' opera ever composed. That's a pretty bold statement, but however you rank it, Mozart's opera is a brilliant combination of stark human tragedy and touching comedy, set to music of limitless genius, which Music Director Mario Alberto Hernandez and his fellow musicians will undoubtedly illuminate to the full.  The production will feature Supertitles in English and Spanish, and our unique projected, moving backdrops.

Giovanni, aka Don Juan; to my mind more comparable to Casanova; was the quintessential rake - a womanizing scoundrel with a list of amorous conquests so long that his right-hand man,  Leporello,  needs an entire aria just to outline it!  The Don will be sung by one of our favourite baritones, Enrique Angeles, whom many of you will remember as the evil Scarpia in our first production of Tosca and, more recently, in La Boheme.  Now one of the most sought after voices in Mexico, he appears regularly in the country's major opera houses, including the Bellas Artes, Merida and the Teatro Bicentanario in Leon.  The crux of the plot is that Giovanni kills the Commendatore, the father of Donna Anna, one of his conquests, and her father returns as a ghost and consigns the Don to hell in one of the most dramatic finales in all opera.  Rodrigo Garciarroyo will sing Donna Anna's fiancé, Don Ottavio.  We are currently casting the other roles.

Despite the essential tragedy of the opera, it is filled with delicious comedy and numerous uproarious moments.  There is a wonderful juxtaposition in Mozart's matchless music and Da Ponte's superb libretto between the notorious, amoral and libertine  Don on the one hand,   and the comic element in his devious schemes and hijinks, aided and abetted by the long suffering Leporello.  The result is a disturbing ambiguity: the Don's personality is so beguiling that audiences tend to root for him at first, even as his dark side becomes obvious. But, when he is invited to hell by the Commendatore, his enemies rejoice and the audience changes sides!

There will be a Gala Fundraiser to benefit our Education Outreach programs on Tuesday,  February 6 at 5 pm, in a magnificent private home in Los Frailes, featuring the Pro Musica Youth Orchestra and the stars of the opera, with a champagne reception and dinner.  Booking for the opera and the Gala will open for Patron Members only on 27 August, when you will receive your booking form for the whole of next season.  VIP packages will also be available then, which include attendance at the Gala, an orchestra ticket for your choice of opera dates with a reserved seat, and an invitation to the cast party after Sunday's performance.  The Lifelong Learning Program ( will be running two, one day courses on Don Giovanni on February 2nd and 8th.  These sell out quickly and you are advised to book now!
